General Goal
The objective of the Project of Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina is to identify the forest remnants of the state, within the state’s three phytogeographic regions: the Mixed Ombrophyllous Forests in the highlands, the Decidual Seasonal Forests in the western region and the Dense Atlantic Rainforests and associated ecosystems like mangroves and ‘restinga’ in the coastal range, aiming to:
· Support the formulation of state forest policy
· Provide information for the ecologic-economic zoning for forestry activities in the state.
· Generate new information to update the state’s red list of endangered plant species.
· Define priority areas for ecossystem conservation and restoration of degraded ecossystems.
Specific goals
- Scanning and integration of the herbarium collections of Santa Catarina; organize and build a data base of available information in the herbaria of Santa Catarina and add more information.
- Inventory and analysis of the composition, horizontal and vertical structure of the remaining forests of Santa Catarina State in 520 sample plots, as well as collecting and identifying all forms of life of vascular plants of those remaining areas.
- Assess the genetic diversity of populations of Araucaria angustifolia, Dicksonia sellowiana, Ocotea porosa and other endangered species, to be defined over the field survey, in order to support effective conservation strategies.
- Identify the most important species in terms of socioeconomic and cultural perspective, their actual and potential uses; realize field research interviewing rural population in the surroundings of plots sampled by field inventory, aiming to characterize their relation and perception of forest and its resources.
- Elaborate and assemble a Georeferenced Information System with a data base containing the necessary information for the analysis of coverage and land use in state of Santa Catarina, and the main information gathered and worked through the inventory, available online.
