What is done with the plants in the herbarium?
At the “Roberto Miguel Klein Herbarium”, the plants are dried and fixed, one by one, on cardboard, to be kept on low temperature and humidity conditions. This way protected against fungus, insects and other organisms, the dried plants (herbarium specimens) can be preserved for decades.

The IFFSC counts with the collaboration of the botanist Marcos Sobral, a leading authority on taxonomy in Brazil. For the determination of the botanical material from the 2008 and 2009 stage, the project counts on the support of others taxonomists.

In the 2007/2010 stage of the IFFSC were collected 25.000 sterile plants and 23.000 fertile plants, resulting on a significant increase of the FURB herbarium collection. The unidentified specimens are sent to taxonomist specialists in Brazil and abroad. The herbarium database, which counts today with over 32.000 herbarium specimens, was totally digitalized.
